ENGEN

ENGEN

Is a tiny community, 10 kilometers west of Vanderhoof and approximately 110 kilometers west of Prince George on the Canadian National Railway Line as well as the Highway #16 (Yellowhead Highway). In 1940 a local resident and entrepreneur by the name of Dave Martens, founded the Plateau Sawmill and makes about 350 million board foot a year, making it one of British Columbia’s largest producers of dimension lumber. The mill has since been owned by the Slocan Forest Products Limited. In addition to the forest industry, Engen also relies on the farming and the ranching industry to contribute to its economy. Engen is unincorporated and is named after Fred Engen who was a pioneer as well as one of its first settlers.
